This story from a remote village in China has all the makings of an old-school mystery novel: a strange commotion in the woods, a canine hero darting to the rescue, and an, uh, little baby buried alive!?
Yes, you read that right! A courageous pup has saved a newborn baby accidentally buried alive in the little town of Wutan, outside China’s south-western megacity Chongqing.
Here’s the scoop per The Telegraph:
The owner of the dog, Yang Jiali, said she discovered the baby boy when the animal began frantically digging at a hole under a bush…
Ms Yang said the baby was wrapped in white cloth and his mouth was full of mud when the dog discovered him earlier this month.
Local doctors said the baby was about one month old, and they suspected he suffered from a serious illness and had been buried by his parents who may have thought he had died, Pear Video reported.
Song Yue, an assistant doctor at a health centre in Wutan described the baby’s condition after he was found on May 6.
“The baby looked pale. His breathing and heart rate were slow. He had low body temperature, and his whole mouth was full of mud,” she said.
Nobody had come to collect the baby from the hospital and police have launched an investigation, the Pear Video report said.
Unfortunately, there has been previous reports of babies being buried alive in China. Private burials of very young babies are relatively common in rural areas and some parents mistakenly believe that their child is dead, when in fact, that’s not the case.
But some parents from poverty-stricken areas often act in desperation, thinking they don’t have the financial means to care for their offspring. Thousands of infants with birth defects or other health problems are reportedly abandoned to die every year in China.
These crimes are rarely prosecuted.
This is a case where human beings, from the United States, China, or any other country can learn something from our four-legged friends. Even the dog in this story understood the value of human life and that defenseless babies should never be abandoned.
There are too many people in the world without children that would love to have them!
What do you think of this dog’s
compassion and quick thinking?
