Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is not taking his twelve indictments lying down! Mr. Manafort filed a lawsuit in U.S. federal court on Wednesday against special counsel Robert Mueller, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and the Department of Justice. He is alleging that Mueller strayed beyond the scope of his mandate.
“The actions of DOJ and Mr. Rosenstein in issuing the Appointment Order, and Mr. Mueller’s actions pursuant to the authority the Order granted him, were arbitrary, capricious, and not in accordance with the law,” the suit states.
Manafort’s claims the order appointing Mueller “exceeds the Deputy Attorney General’s authority.” All actions taken by the special counsel “must be set aside,” the suit states.
Check out the details, per CNBC:
The appointment order authorizing Mueller as special counsel permits him to investigate any matters that “may arise directly from the investigation.” Experts have said it gives Mueller wide latitude to determine the course of his investigation.
“I think it’s going to be an uphill battle,” said Sol Wisenberg, a leading white collar attorney, referring to Manafort’s suit. “These kinds of things usually don’t prevail.”
Manafort was indicted Oct. 27 on 12 counts related to unlawful financial dealings. He pleaded not guilty and has been contesting the charges. A trial is scheduled to begin in May.
The special counsel’s office declined to comment.
Although Paul Manafort was a very competent campaign chair for President Trump, he apparently committed some illegal actions not related to his political work. Of course, he will have his day in court and a jury of his peers will decide his fate.
The larger issue here has to do with Robert Mueller and the investigation he is conducting. Any indictments issued against former or current Trump administration officials indirectly implicates the president. Let’s just call a spade a spade.
The whole point of this is to discredit Trump and impede his ability to enact his legislative agenda. Is it not?
To that end, Mueller has been somewhat successful with lots of help from the mainstream media. However, public opinion is shifting now that the obvious bias within the investigation has been exposed.
Mr. President, we stand with you sir against this politically-motivated witch hunt.
